MEET THE UNIQUE FLORIDA SCRUB JAY
A smart, sociable and beautiful bird only found in this state. For thousands of years, the Scrub Jay has been surviving in the Floridian scrub, overcoming many a challenge.
Now it is disappearing right before our eyes.
The scrub ecosystem, the only home of this bird, is almost gone. On the one hand, it is a coveted land for construction and on the other, it thrives through fire -which is not desirable around such construction.
For many decades, experts have issued warnings and proposals on how to protect Florida’s only fully endemic bird. Victories have paled in comparison to the rate of growth and ‘development’ that Florida has suffered, particularly in the last few years.
The trend path is clear.
But we don’t want it to end this way.
And we know we’re not alone in this sentiment. The plight of the Scrub Jay is a metaphor of the plight of us, too. It is also a stern reminder that, even when everything seems lost, our decisions are the root for change, the seeds for a better future, and the building blocks of a different reality.
There is always ways to coexist with nature and to steward it responsibly. We want to find them through supporting efforts to preserve and strengthen the Scrub Jay populations. You can find them too, from a sparkling pool in the Treasure Coast, when you join us in this effort.
